That leaves out a critical piece of the puzzle: whether the moves those oscillators are measuring are actually backed by volume. The Money Flow Index (MFI) and Chaikin Money Flow (CMF) close that gap. Both blend price and volume into a single reading, which is why traders often call MFI “volume-weighted RSI.” They answer a question price-only tools can’t: is money actually flowing into or out of this instrument, or is the move running on fumes?

What Is the Money Flow Index (MFI)?
MFI is a bounded oscillator (0–100) developed by Gene Quong and Avrum Soudack. It’s built the same way RSI is — a ratio of “up” activity to “down” activity, scaled into a 0–100 band — except each period’s activity is weighted by volume instead of counted as a flat price change.

Because volume is baked in, MFI tends to reach extremes less often than RSI but those extremes carry more weight — a reading above 80 means buying pressure was genuinely heavy, not just that price closed up several days in a row.
What Is Chaikin Money Flow (CMF)?
CMF, developed by Marc Chaikin, takes a different route to the same goal: measuring buying versus selling pressure through volume. Instead of typical price, it uses where each period’s close falls within that period’s range — the Close Location Value (CLV) — then weights it by volume and sums over a lookback period (20 is standard).

MFI vs CMF: Key Differences
Traders new to money-flow indicators often assume MFI and CMF are interchangeable. They aren’t — they measure related but distinct things.

The short version: MFI is a bounded momentum oscillator best used for overbought/oversold signals and divergence, the same way you’d use RSI. CMF is an unbounded pressure gauge best used to confirm whether accumulation or distribution is underway, closer in spirit to OBV or the A/D line.

Overbought/oversold reversals
Look for MFI to cross back below 80 (from above) or back above 20 (from below) as a trigger, rather than acting the instant it touches the extreme — extremes can persist in strong trends.
Bullish/bearish divergence
Price makes a new low while MFI makes a higher low → selling pressure is weakening even as price falls, a classic early-reversal signal. The volume weighting makes MFI divergence somewhat more reliable than plain RSI divergence, since it’s confirming that the divergence is backed by an actual shift in participation.
Midline (50) crosses
MFI crossing above 50 supports a bullish bias; crossing below supports bearish — useful as a trend filter alongside a moving-average system.

Trend confirmation
In an uptrend, CMF holding consistently above zero confirms genuine accumulation supporting the move. If price keeps climbing but CMF drifts toward or below zero, the rally is losing volume support — a warning sign, not necessarily a reversal signal on its own.
Breakout confirmation
A price breakout from a range accompanied by CMF pushing above +0.20–0.25 suggests real buying behind the move. A breakout on a flat or negative CMF is more likely to fail or get retested.
Zero-line crosses as a swing filter
Some swing traders only take long setups when CMF is above zero and short setups when it’s below — a simple pressure filter layered on top of a separate entry trigger.
Combining MFI and CMF With Price Action
Neither indicator should be traded in isolation — that rule applies here as much as it does everywhere else in technical analysis. A practical combination:
- Use CMF on a higher timeframe (daily or weekly) to establish whether the broader pressure is accumulation or distribution.
- Use MFI on the trading timeframe to time entries — waiting for oversold MFI readings in a CMF-confirmed uptrend, or overbought MFI readings in a CMF-confirmed downtrend.
- Watch for agreement, not just individual signals: MFI divergence that coincides with a CMF zero-line cross in the same direction is a stronger case than either signal alone.

- Treating MFI’s 0–100 scale like CMF’s zero-centered scale. They’re not directly comparable; don’t apply the same threshold logic to both.
- Ignoring instrument-specific volume data. In Forex, volume is usually tick volume rather than true traded volume (see our tick volume article for the caveats this introduces) — both MFI and CMF inherit that limitation on FX pairs.
- Using default lookback periods on every timeframe without testing. 14-period MFI and 20-period CMF are starting points, not universal constants — shorter lookbacks react faster but generate more noise.
- Acting on a single extreme reading. As with any oscillator, extremes in a strong trend can persist far longer than expected; combine with price structure before trading against the trend.

14 periods is the standard and works well as a starting point on daily charts. Shorter settings (like 9 or 10) react faster but generate more false signals. Longer settings (like 21 or 25) smooth out noise but lag more. Test against your specific instrument and timeframe rather than assuming the default is optimal.

20 periods is the standard, originally designed around a trading month (roughly 20 trading days). Some traders use a shorter 10-period CMF for more responsive signals on lower timeframes.
Is MFI better than RSI?
Neither is strictly “better” . MFI adds volume weighting that RSI lacks, which can make its signals more meaningful when volume data is reliable. On instruments where volume data is thin or unreliable (like many retail Forex feeds using tick volume), RSI and MFI tend to converge in usefulness, and RSI’s simplicity becomes an advantage.
Can MFI and CMF be used on cryptocurrency?
Yes, and often more effectively than on Forex, since most crypto exchanges report actual traded volume rather than tick volume. That makes the volume weighting in both indicators more meaningful on crypto pairs than on FX pairs.
